My history teacher this last year claimed that he doesn't really see this new wave of immigration (legal or not) as a big issue. He cites two or three waves of immigration from history (especially the wave around the turn of the twentieth century) to demonstrate that immigration has always been an issue, people usually respond to immigrants negatively, and after twenty or thirty years, once the new group of people has assimilated, the problem has gone away and Americans accept their new fellow citizens. My point was always this: can we really call this new group of people "citizens?" The immigrants from Europe and Asia that you talk about did this legally...

it's not clear how realistic it is to have a policy that would suggest that the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants should return to their native countries. I think that is the first question we need to resolve. Should the large number of undocumented immigrants return home? If you believe yes, how would we do this that makes sense...

This is such a sensitive issue and that lack of understanding is essential. My parents were first generation immigrants and it's so hard to legally immigrate to this country. I think that the barriers to citizenship should be addressed. Most immigrants want to be legal citizens but the pathyway to citizenship can be lengthy and frustrating.
