Every week I'll be posting a policy or issue related to youth. Sound Off! I want to know what Youthink!

A recent study by America's Promise Alliance found that only 70% of students graduate from high school nation-wide. In some larger cities, such as Detroit, the rate falls to 30-50%! Why do Youthink so many students do not finish high school? Who is at fault? What can be done to change this?

Our city (Oak Ridge, TN) has one of the top schools in the state and is ranked nationally, but our graduation rate is still only 82%. It is very difficult to meet the standards that all schools face for funding, but it is even more difficult for schools to challenge students at every level. Here, we see that the brightest students move on to Ivy league schools, but we still have 18% of students falling through the cracks who often go unnoticed. The drop-out problem starts at home with parents who are unavailable, but it is also the fault of the schools.
